Press Release: Volunteering England welcomes Phil Hope as new Minister for Third Sector

2 July 2007

Justin Davis-Smith, Deputy Chief Executive of Volunteering England, said:

“Volunteering England welcomes the appointment of Phil Hope to the post of Minister for the Third Sector. We trust that he will build on Ed Miliband’s commitment to volunteering and continue to keep volunteering at the top of the OTS agenda. Furthermore, we would hope that the following will be treated as priorities by the new Minister:

  • Ensuring sustainability for a modernised Volunteer Centre infrastructure;
  • Removing the unnecessary bureaucracy and red tape which acts as a barrier to volunteering;
  • Developing a greater culture of volunteering within the public services.

“We also welcome the appointment of Baroness Julia Neuberger, Chair on the Commission for the Future of Volunteering as a special advisor to the Prime Minster. I am confident she will ensure that volunteering is championed at the highest level of government and will remain a key strategic theme in all sector initiatives.

“Furthermore, Volunteering England acknowledges Ed Miliband’s contribution to the Third Sector, in particular his input to the Third Sector Advisory Group and wishes him well in his new roles as secretary for the cabinet and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.”
