Management Standards for Work-Related Stress - HSE
Stress in the workplace can lead to a high level of both sickness absence and staff turnover, as well as poor performance. HSE has produced a Management Standard that examines how work-related stress can be reduced in six key areas of work. These areas are: demands; control; support; relationships; roles and change.
By adapting the Standard to apply to volunteers, this could help tackle some of the problems that people have whilst volunteering, and may even be helpful in raising volunteer retention levels. Furthermore, stress management may be particularly relevant to more vulnerable volunteers, for instance those in long-term unemployment or with mental health issues.
