It is estimated that 29 million people regularly take part in sport or physical recreation, from swimming to hiking and from football to ballroom dancing.
There are 270 governing bodies which promote and organise these sporting activities, and two main bodies in England which represent or fund sport at a national level.
The Central Council of Physical Recreation
The Central Council of Physical Recreation is an independent umbrella body which looks after the interests of all 270 governing bodies in UK sport. It promotes and supports the development of sport, but doesn't have any funding responsibilities.
Sport England
Sport England is the Government agency responsible for advising, investing in and promoting community sport. Sport England funds around 30 priority sports through its lottery funding, and also has other pots of money to fund other sports activities. Sport England works through a “delivery system for sport” which includes the 30 priority National Governing Bodies of Sport, Sport England Regional Offices, County Sports Partnerships and Community Sports Networks.
Volunteering and sport infrastructure
Volunteering England and Sport England are running a project designed to get sport and volunteering infrastructure working more closely together.
