Case Study - Shelter in Scotland
Shelter's FareShare project in Scotland provides a range of volunteering opportunities to people who either are or have been homeless. Working in a food depot, the volunteers' tasks include driving the vans to make deliveries and collections, loading and unloading the vehicles and ensuring that the depot meets food hygiene standards.
The Supported Volunteering project provides volunteers with the opportunity to learn new skills and enhance their employability, as well as helping others. It gives a structure to the day, and can also help to relieve loneliness and overcome cycles of substance abuse.
We liked this project because it demonstrates how wide-ranging Supported Volunteering schemes can be, and how they can be developed to benefit other disadvantaged groups in society, thus making volunteering more accessible to everyone.
