Branch Networks in the 21st Century

Branch Networks in the 21st Century front cover

Does your organisation involve volunteers?
Does it work with branches or groups?

Look out for Branch networks in the 21st century: a handbook, to be published by Volunteering England in January 2006.

A branch network can bring a voluntary organisation huge benefits and strengths. But it can also present real management challenges.

Are branches too powerful and uncontrollable, bringing unacceptable degrees of risk into an organisation? Or do they represent the true heart and soul of the organisation, bringing levels of support and experience (and sometimes money) that are impossible to get from elsewhere?

Very little has been written about how branch networks operate, even though such networks are widespread in the sector. Branch networks in the 21st century: a handbook , by Sarah J Butler, fills this gap. It addresses three key questions:

  • How can branch networks thrive in the 21st century?
  • What does a successful network look like?
  • How to we address the tension between control and autonomy?

It also looks at how a range of different organisations work with their networks and includes numerous case studies. It will be essential reading for any voluntary organisation working with branches and groups.
