Social Networking Workshops
Have you heard the term social media or read about Facebook and Twitter but not known how they could apply to your work?
Social media can help your organisation reach volunteers, communicate with other volunteer managers and help you campaign more effectively.
Three new dates have been announced for workshops run by Red Foundation and NAVCA.
- 2 September - Darlington
- 7 October - Taunton
- 13 October - Leicester
As well as learning about the types of social media available, the workshops will enable you to place these tools into the context of your own organisation and increase your confidence in using them through a practical social media surgery session.
Cost: £35 per person
Booking information: please download and complete a booking form and return it to events@navca.org.uk. If you need assistance please contact Carolyn Ellis on 0114 289 3952.
These workshops are a joint initiative of the Modernising Volunteering workstream, led by Volunteering England and ICT workstream, funded by Capacitybuilders National Support Services programme.
Rectruiting and retaining young volunteers
7 October 2010
BTCV, Sedum House, Doncaster
Many organisations are keen to involve young volunteers but have concerns that they may need a high level of support and supervision, about safeguarding (especially for those under 18), and an assumption of difficulties in getting insurance cover. This event explores these issues and a range of strategies to engage and retain young volunteers. It will include the benefits of having young volunteers, strategies for recruiting and retaining them, issues relating to young volunteers and the law, the Vetting and Barring Scheme and its implications, the teenage body clock and strategies to reduce its impact on the performance of young volunteers.

Getting local people active and involved
12 October 2010
BTCV, Sedum House, Doncaster
How can we genuinely involve local people in our work? How can we make sure people have a good time and want to do more? How can we make sure their involvement works for us too? This interactive and very popular event will provide you with methods for increasing the involvement of local people in environmental projects. Using lessons from our own work, the day begins by looking at what encourages people to get involved and ends by designing involvement opportunities in your own projects and activities.
The event will be of interest to staff working in environmental and countryside situations who work with communities as part of their job, including community forest staff, rangers, rights of way and access staff, project managers, field and project officers, woodland officers, rural community councils and local authority staff. It is also suitable for volunteers and members of voluntary groups who want to increase their membership. It will be most suitable for people at project officer level who have some experience, but those new in post who would like to gain insight and ideas for working with communities will find plenty to inspire them.

Managing volunteers
19 October 2010
BTCV, Sedum House, Doncaster
This event will look at how you can get the best out of your regular volunteers by offering them individual management. This will include considering your role as a manager, and your relationship with those volunteers. It will also show you how you can use work plans, individual supervision and training plans to maximise the quality of input you get from the volunteers and to help them get the best from their experiences with your organisation. The day is designed for those who are managing long term volunteers with individual job roles, not for those who manage volunteers as a group.
