Financial support

Linking financial support to employer supported volunteering

Many companies support their employees’ volunteering through schemes such as matching their fundraising, giving financial awards to the employee’s chosen charity or providing resources to support the volunteering activity such as a grant to buy materials and equipment.

Typically, many employers will offer a contribution to support team community challenges usually anything from £100 - £500. This contribution needs to be spent on materials, resources and equipment to support the activity, and in some cases employees are required to match this amount.

Barclays Bank

At Barclays we want to make it as easy as possible for our people to get involved in the local community. It’s their choice who, when and how to help – we’ll simply offer our support whenever we can.

Giving – Giving is all about fundraising and donating money. We can make Barclays colleagues money go further.

Give your pennies – A penny here and a penny there can really add up. Barclays people can donate the ‘spare’ pennies from their salary each month to help raise money for five chosen charities£61,365 raised last year.

Matched payroll giving – With Give As You Earn, Barclays colleagues can make donations from their pre-tax pay. This means giving £10 actually only costs £7.80 ( or £6 for higher rate tax payers ). Plus we matched the donation and cover the administration costs, turning £7.80 into £20 for their chosen charity. £1,037,232 donated by colleagues last year.

£ for £ matched fundraising - When Barclays people raise money for charity, we’ll make it up to £750. And what’s more, we’ll do this three times a year. £13.8 million raised last year.

Volunteering – Donating time and sharing skills is a great way to help. And Barclays are right behind it.

Volunteering in work time – Giving time and talents can make a real difference. That’s why we’re happy to give Barclays staff at least two days a year in work time to support community activities. Last year 19,672 Barclays colleagues volunteered in their local community.

Group Volunteering grants – Many hands make light work, so if Barclays people get together a group of five or more volunteers, they can apply for a £500 to go towards materials and expenses.

In 2006 Barclays helped more than 33,000 colleagues give their time and money through volunteering and fundraising to the causes that matter to them most. Our community programme added up to £46.5 million.

Royal Bank of Scotland Group

Many staff are generous with their time, effort and skills, making a contribution to their communities in all kinds of ways; as sports coaches, mentors, committee or PTA members, school governors, youth leaders or treasurers, for example. Those who give up their time in this way to help local community groups, schools or charities can apply for a Community Cashback Award ranging from £100 to £1,000 for their organisation. The amount depends on how they help their good cause and whether they do that as an individual or with a team of work colleagues.

  • In 2005 RBS awarded 7,000 Community Cashback Awards totalling £2.5m for the schools, charities and local community groups that employees helped
