Recognition

Recognising and publicising the contributions made by employer supported volunteers demonstrates to them, and everyone, that their volunteering is really appreciated.

Effective recognition motivates volunteers to continue or increase their involvement, encourage others to get involved, and promote the activities and programmes taking place.

Don’t forget ….

  • Recognition should fit in with the employer’s culture
  • Everyone should be involved as much as possible – from the top down
  • Respect volunteers’ privacy, and check in advance if volunteers are happy for you to publicise what they have been doing – internally and externally
  • Keep in touch with those who organise activities and ask for their feedback and comments on the best ways to recognise volunteers achievements
  • Make sure recognition schemes are kept special – do not recognise too many volunteers at once
  • Rewards and recognition do not have to be financial
