Department of Trade and Industry report

According to a research report by the Department of Trade & Industry, Engaging SMEs in Community and Social Issues:

• 86% of SMEs think organisations like themselves should pay significant attention to social and environmental responsibilities
• 60% work with schools and colleges to develop skills and training
• 52% work with charities and the voluntary sector
• 53% say they are active in the local community

Reasons for this activity include personal interest and fulfillment, improved staff and motivation, giving something back to the local community and enhancing business reputation. Activities concentrate on increasing employee skills, team building and staff issues.

One main barrier to engagement was lack of knowledge about community issues.
