Worried what people will think
The stigma attached to mental illness is so great in society today that many people will avoid disclosure at all costs. Others may feel more comfortable discussing their illness but will also be very aware of the reactions this might prompt others, reactions that are often based on many of the assumptions listed above. Anyone with experience of mental ill health will have been affected by the negative beliefs, attitudes and value judgements society holds regarding mental illness in some way.
What to do
Don’t create situations that might single people out specifically. For instance, don’t make a big deal out of a new volunteer who has just been referred from mental health services. Treat any information regarding a person’s health status with the utmost confidentiality. Create a volunteering environment that welcomes all volunteers, regardless of their status and ensure everyone receives fair and equal treatment.
