Volunteer management in your 2009 - 2013 applications

Are you a national governing body of sport who is currently planning to apply for Sport England funding for 2009 - 2013?

Have you considered how your volunteer management will build towards your grow, sustain, excel targets?

Volunteering England has been working with NGBs and Sport England to help them plan for volunteer management in 2009 -2013.

Here are some of the top questions we have been asked by national governing bodies as they prepare their funding applications for 2009 - 2013:

Q. What training is available for volunteer managers?

A. Have a look at this information sheet about training for volunteer managers from Volunteering England

Q. What should be the difference between our volunteering targets and our volunteer management work?

A. The "support for volunteering from Volunteering England" document should give you an idea: Volunteering England works in both volunteering and volunteer management fields. At the moment, NGBs may be more likely to find our support and products on volunteer management most useful.

Q. How can our NGB networks work with all of the Volunteer Centres?

A. Volunteering England, our regional contacts at Sport England and Volunteer Centres have been creating joint working arrangements between county sports partnerships, local authorities and Volunteer Centres over the past 3 years. Through CSPs: the lynchpins within the sport world, we encourage NGBs to co-ordinate their volunteering targets with CSPs, and in particular, flagging up that you want CSPs to co-ordinate your work with Volunteer Centres. The detail of how this will actually look will depend on the CSP offer to NGBs, and also on what funding is available for Volunteer Centres to get more involved in delivering sport targets. For examples of where Volunteer Centres have been funded to work with sport already, visit our case study pages.

Q. How can our governing body keep up to date with volunteer management - good practice seems to change a lot!

A. One of the best ways is to become a member of Volunteering England. As a member you will hear about our new products and services, receive discounts, get the chance to find out how others manage their volunteers and have access to our full range of volunteer management good practice. We work closely with all areas of government and are increasingly inviting our members to get involved in our policy and campaigns work. We recognise sport is a major area of interest for a huge number of volunteers and have very good relationships with all sizes of NGBs who are our current members. We look forward to welcoming even more NGBs as members over the coming months.
