The history of Going Further
The Student Volunteering Team set up ‘Going Further’ in 2006, a project which was in response to a growing number of enquiries coming from the Further Education sector as to how to set up student volunteering which completed in 2008.
During the project, Going Further has supported six colleges to become ‘Flagship Centres of Student Volunteering’ , Bridgwater, Harrogate, Liverpool Community, Newcastle, Oxford and Cherwell Valley and Tower Hamlets College have all set up innovative student volunteering programmes enabling almost 600 students to volunteer in their communities, both in and outside of College.
Volunteering England is now able to offer a range of advice and support relating to Further Education volunteering, and has set up a Further Education volunteering information resource bank and a new online and print publication ‘Improving skills and life chances through volunteering: an fe toolkit’
In addition to this, we have been working strategically across the sector to support the widespread set up of student volunteering in Further Education Colleges. You can read about this recent work to strategically set up the Further Education voluntary sector. We want to see the day when all students have the opportunity to volunteer to make a change in their communities.
Going Further has been funded by the National Lottery's Young People's Fund.
