The Student Volunteering Team, Volunteering England, working in collaboration with the Choose Action Alliance, launched the Virtual Volunteering programme in May 2007 to the student volunteering community.
Virtual volunteering (VV) is a way for students to make an impact on their communities via the internet, a computer, or any digital platform. The aim of this project is to encourage the participation of students who, for various reasons, do not currently volunteer and allows students the flexibility to complete tasks at a time and place that suits them best.
So far Bradford, Nottingham, Sussex, York St Johns’, Kent and Essex Universities and Lewisham Further Education College have been chosen to pilot the Virtual Volunteering project. These institutions will benefit from dedicated support and advice to create virtual volunteering opportunities from The Student Volunteering Team and The Choose Action Alliance.
Over the next six months, The Student Volunteering Team will be producing fact sheets and compiling information for Universities and Colleges to build on the work on the pilot projects so that other institutions can utilise virtual volunteering projects to enhance their work.
The Choose Action Alliance was founded in 2005 and is a partnership between four UK-based youth volunteer organisations: Changemakers; Youth Action Network; Worldwide Volunteering; and YouthNet.
