Employee volunteering and the Civil Service

Justin Davis Smith, Chief Executive of Volunteering England, welcomed the announcement from the Cabinet Office that the Civil Service has committed to giving 30,000 volunteering days a year, with each civil servant encouraged to do at least one day to volunteering.

“It’s very good news to get the announcement, which was promised in the Coalition Agreement, that civil servants are being encouraged to volunteer. It will be of great benefit both for civil servants as volunteers and for the community and voluntary groups they help.

“I am pleased to see how major corporates are joining in with the civil service. There is huge scope for collaboration across sectors in opening up volunteering opportunities, for sharing skills and enjoying different ways of working.”

“We know how useful volunteering can be for developing and sharing skills.

Through the National Support Service on Modernising Volunteering we have helped develop a programme of skills-based volunteering specifically aimed at employees from small and medium sized companies which demonstrates the benefits for the volunteer, the business and the community (link to evaluation report below). We have also been working with Local Government Improvement and Development on pilot projects with local authorities on how local government staff can volunteer in community groups.”
